就這樣,我在無意間打開了潘多拉的盒子,和老人家建立了奇怪的情誼。在英語交流的天地中,我逐漸知道他的喜怒哀樂、知道他的悲歡離合、知道他身處如今困境的緣由:夫妻倆從美國回台灣養老。自己在入住這個地方之後,佈置客廳家電時,竟然頭暈跌了一跤,傷及後腦造成四肢癱瘓,從此臥床不起。此後,陪他出去散步時,爺爺開始有應有答、有說還會有笑。那也是我實驗英文交流的大好時機。
有一天,被我代班的陸籍照護學姐在交接時,私下告訴我,爺爺都不肯吃她幫他削好的蘋果、鳳梨、水梨水果拼盤,交給你處理啦。爺爺看到是我出現眼前,手上還捧著水果盤,擠出一個尷尬的笑容。

Could you give me a word why you don’t like them, em…?
……!
OK!No reason means no comment, then, let’s try together to finish this dish, OK? Thank …… U ……!
我戳起一片水果送過去就他的口,爺爺老大不願意地、勉強地吃了一片。一來一往循環了多個回合,眼見就快要收圓了。最後,他望著剩下的四片蘋果,停住不吃了!我望著他搖搖頭。他也望著我搖搖頭……
我說:
Err…, as an IBMer, I do remember, we all have a good tradition, that is, we never give up any job allocation, we always are told to live or to die with our assignment, aren’t you? So, let’s finish the remaining 4 pieces of apple slice, this is our assignment today, OK?
我巴望著爺爺會給出一個比較正面的回應。
不料,爺爺看著我,緩緩吐出:
I … am …. no、no、not … that … stu…u…u…pid … to、to、to …… do … this!
Ooops…… 把我笑翻了。
當然,那四片變成深褐色,還是沒吃掉的蘋果片,最後都進了垃圾桶啦!
